Star Trek Beyond
Good movie but too Hollywood. -Good comedic writing, I'd forgotten, but sometimes overdone, characters say a joke at expense of authentic humanity. -Unbelievability was huge holey issue in script. This group of people sitting like ducks being fired at and they were all okay. He grabs her hand midair. Only side characters die etc. etc. Better writing would've made it feel more authentic. -Too much tell, not enough show. (Like his realization that he has something loud and obnoxious, we get it, you don't have to drag it out or state it outright especially when the next scene would just cut to it come on!) -A Beastie Boys song defeats the army and saves millions. I mean... I enjoy a cathartic song moment but again better writing to keep me from feeling like really? really? just gonna play a song hm. hm okay. but I will still enjoy this. -We're in the future and for some reason all the main characters are white dudes. Get me more female characters plzzz. -Spock x Uhura my logic x emotion babiessss. Stop breaking them up in every movie and learn to actually write relationships...? -So much buzz for having an LGBT relationship. A huge deal but rep wise only slightly better than Dumbledore. If you didn't know beforehand maybe the other dude is his brother or something you know? I heard they cut one of their scenes which is just such BS. Sulu's husband only get 3 v. short scenes, and if you're actually giving a shit about this and looking for him, the last scene has him with a weird expression on his face amidst a smiling crowd. It should've been found in editing if they gave more of a care, unless it was meant to convey something which was lost? -Still had that spacey, adventurous, epic, get lost in another world vibe and great character chemistry and dynamics. -(Okay but seriously if they had it scripted that Scotty say "lassy" one more times I would've supported his death.)

The Lobster
Negative stars needed. Felt like needed a cleanse afterwards. Unpleasant movie. Where to begin? -In the beginning I liked that it was a different world with different rules of behavior. Created interest and suspense. I like weirdness but obviously there are different kind of weirdnesses and after 20 minutes the movie had been going on long enough that I could understand it was not for me. -If anything this movie cemented a life lesson. Do not bother waiting for things to redeem themselves. They never do. -I liked the director's Dogtooth's originality more or less but through this I kept going: WTF am I watching, WTF am I watching and then When will it end? -Porn sexual weirdness, gross uncomfortable sex scenes, gore. A third of the theater audience was literally covering their face or turning it to the side to avoid their eyes in the last minutes of the movie. -There are no redeemable characters. They do cruel random things to each other. -The premise is never fully explained (why it came to be this weird shit). -Obviously a metaphor for something but too fucking unpleasant to watch. Some comment on love and relationships and blinding yourself for the other. The relationships of the movie are based around a single seemingly inconsequential shared similarity and people will lie to get into relationships about said similarity (singular). -It is illegal to be single in main arena and illegal to be coupled with rebels. No one seems to legitimately care about each other (ex) husband who would've shot wife, Rachel Weiz saying you should have blinded him instead). -Also some kind of theme on world not allowing inbetween states. Scene where Colin Farrel talks about being bisexual gave me life but who the fuck knows what theme was supposed to convey. I could look up what it meant bc I still have searching for redemption for garbage issues. -Everybody in the movie talks the same. Like stunted robots. -Feel a little like have been psychologically damaged by this movie. -Why are so many famous people in this?????????????????? -I expected there to be threads tying weirdness together into you know coherent whole but a lot of it is just random shit.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2
I liked the first half but I started to get bored and ended up turning it off. I don't think the actors have the chemistry they did in first movie. There are also some clearly Italian "ma" actors but whatever it's Hollywood. Still appreciated the jokes about all words/people having Greek roots.

Thirteen
Very well acted but too much soap opera, jealousies over her coming back (the once boyfriend's wife, the cop's partner, the sister's fiance) etc. The type of drama that doesn't feel meaningful but shallow. -Richard Rankin is so pretty in this. Damn that accent. -I had no idea Jodie Comer was such a good actress. But also ugh, every time it shows her fingers being fingerprinted it's like looking at bones she's so skinny. -There is a reoccuring victim blaming theme that feels done up to create suspense over her motives but is really absolute ignorance over how trauma works. -Seriously every actor is well cast. Except the bad guy; that is too much creepy. -Ends very suddenly with a lot of loose ends in the relationships. Thought there would be another episode to tie things up but no. Can't really recommend it. -But the actor chemistry was good and Richard Rankin.
